Students Consulting on Teaching (SCoT)
EDEU supports the training of student consultants to be able to undertake observations of teaching practice. Upon your request we find a student independent of your discipline to provide objective feedback on how to develop practice. This is a similar process to PROP but from the perspective of a student.
In 2014 we launched a pilot of ‘Students Consulting on Teaching’ (SCoTs) in partnership with the Student Union, whereby, at an academic’s request, students undertake observations of teaching and learning in a school/subject other than their own and provide objective feedback on how to develop that practice.
The scheme engages students in deep and meaningful conversations about quality student learning experiences in ways we have not done before and should provide a platform to encourage more of these conversations between staff and students as standard.
Joint Review of Practice
EDEU was granted a small pot of funding from the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) to explore how student observation of teaching can both connect with and complement peer review of practice. Joint Review of Practice is currently being piloted.
Earlier this year the Student Engagement Team were successful in securing a SEDA grant to fund this project. As part of this funding we are hoping to run some pilots of teaching observations which both an academic and a student trained as part of our Students Consulting on Teaching (SCoTs) scheme would be involved in. The intention of these pilots is to help us analyse the difference between peer and student observations, and explore the benefits of having different perspectives providing feedback on the same teaching session.
If you are interested in this project, please get in touch to arrange a meeting to discuss your involvement.
